1) To asses the influence of the ponds and channels that have been constructed in the wetlands on the capacity of these systems to depurate water flowing througout them.
2) To study the biogeochemical processes related to the dynamics of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in the soil-water-plant system of wetlands unaffected and affected by mining wastes.
3) To test the effect of liming on the biogeochemical processes, as well as on soil microbiology and plant growth.
The specific objectives were:
1. Establish if the capacity of the coastal wetlands of the Mar Menor to reduce the contents of nitrogen and phosphorus in the waters that flow along them decreases due to the construction of ponds and channels.
2.- To establish if liming in wetlands affected by mining wastes can be a suitable management option to improve chemical and physical soil properties and if these improvements could contribute to the growth of plants.
3.- Determine the behavior of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in the plant-soil system in soils affected and not affected by mining residues, when flooding-drying periods lead to changes in oxidation-reduction conditions.
