Profesor del Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zürich) (Suiza)
Director del Soil Protection Group
Rainer Schulin has been Professor of Soil Protection in the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology of the ETH Zurich since April 1990, at first as Associate Professor and since October 1998, as a Full Professor.
Prof. Schulin was born on July 22, 1952. He studied biology and in 1981 was awarded a doctorate in zoology from the University of Zurich (Dr. Phil. II). After a second course of study in forest sciences in Dept. VI of the ETH Zurich, he became a member of the scientific staff of Professor Flühler in Soil Physics at the ETH Zurich from 1983 to1990. During this time he spent several months at the USDA Salinity Laboratory in Riverside, California, and on a second occasion, at the Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge.
Rainer Schulin developed the teaching and research in this discipline. Soil protection is a field of specialization for students of environmental engineering in the Department of Civil, Geomatic and Environmental Engineering (D-BAUG), and an elective course in the Department of Environmental Sciences (D-UMNW). The main focus of research is on assessment, analysis, prevention and remediation of soil degradation by polluting heavy metals and by compaction due to mechanical stresses by heavy machinery
